Angela Alonso

Founder and teacher

Angela has been dancing flamenco since the age of four and founded  Ilusión Flamenca shortly after her arrival in London in 1998. Her distinctive choreographies are cultural fusions of traditional flamenco and contemporary influences.

Biography

Angela Alonso was born in Almeria, Andalucía, into a family where music and dance held a paramount position. Her aunt, Trinidad Garcia, a flamenco and ballet teacher herself, introduced Angela to this art form at the age of four. Since then, flamenco has been Angela’s way of life. She has trained with such remarkable dancers and choreographers as Manolo Marin and Chiqui de Jerez, and participated in national and international events and dance festivals in Moscow, Tel-Aviv, Lisbon, Istanbul, Paris and Marrakesh. Angela has been touring worldwide since the age of 13.

Angela starred in a promotional video for Keane’s live concert in Madrid, and has been featured in the Times as part of their reportage on A Taste of Spain, the Spanish Regent Street Festival which Angela has collaborated on with the Spanish Tourist Board. In May 2008 they set the new World Guinness Record of Sevillanas Dance, as part of the London Big Dance project led by Ken Livingstone.

Her school was selected by BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing to teach the eventual winner, Jill Halfpenny. She has also appeared at Sadler’s Wells theatre with London based Spanish band LaXula as part of La Linea Festival.

She has had many television appearances (ITV UK, MTV, TVE2 Spain and Canal Sur Andalucia,) and has been interviewed on several London radio stations. She has recently been a guest on the BBC Robert Elms show, and collaborated with international flamenco star Rafael Amargo, artistic director of the West End musical El Zorro.

Chiqui de Jerez

Partner in Jerez and guest teacher

Chiqui started dancing in Jerez with Angelita Gomez and Juan Parra, continuing in Seville with the likes of Manolo Marin, La Tona, Javier Latorre, Adrian Galia, Alejandro Granados, Antonio Canales, Mario Maya, Javier Baron, Eva Yerbabuena, Joaquin Grilo, Rafaela Carrasco, and others. She has toured and performed around Italy, Switzerland, Canada and the US, and her flamenco school in Jerez de la Frontera has become an established and well-recognised institution in Andalucía and beyond.

Ilusíon Flamenca has partnered with Chiqui de Jerez to provide short-term intensive courses in London, including general technique and more developed choreographies such as bulerías. For details on upcoming courses, take a look at our special flamenco courses and workshops.
